FAQs

3. Cost, Equipment, and Homework

Do I have to buy a textbook?

It depends on the MOOC. Although MOOCs do not charge tuition and fees, some MOOCs include suggestions for textbook purchases; other MOOCs include all reading materials. The decision to purchase or not to purchase the texts is up to you.

What equipment do I need to take the course?

All you need is a computer and a relatively fast internet connection. We recommend using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your Internet browser.

Will I have homework?

Not in the traditional sense. Self-correcting quizzes and exams allow you to test yourself on how well you comprehend the material. There are also discussion questions in the forum for reflection. As with most anything, the more effort you put in the more you get out. See also “guided cohort” below.

2. Registration

How do I register to take the course?

You can sign up for a UNCG MOOC at the sign up page. Information you will need includes your first name, last name, and email address.

I have filled out the “Sign Up” form. Now what?

Within a business day, you will receive a registration confirmation email with your username, temporary password, and instructions for accessing your course. If the course is offered with a guided discussion option, you will receive that information as an attachment to the registration confirmation email.

5. Course Length and Guided Cohort Options

What is the guided cohort?

Some MOOCs offer the option to participate in a guided cohort. The guided cohort begins and ends on specific dates. The advantage is it includes discussion leaders in the class forum to interact with. The guided leaders bring knowledge of the topic and will gladly interact with you and others taking the course.

How long will the course last?

Generally speaking, UNCG MOOCs are designed to be self-paced and self-directed and do not have a set timeline. Some UNCG MOOCs may include an option to participate in a  “guided cohort,” a directed discussion covering a portion of the course on set dates. If you participate in the guided cohort, there will be a calendar and discussion leaders in the class forum to interact with. The guided leaders bring knowledge of the topic and will gladly interact with you and others taking the course.  If the MOOC you are registering for has this option, you will receive additional information at the time of registration.

If you participate in the course independently, you set the pace. How long it lasts is up to you. If a course has a guided cohort option, you will receive information about the opportunity with your registration confirmation.

How do I participate in the guided cohort?

If the MOOC you are taking has a guided cohort, your confirmation email for the MOOC will include a link to a downloadable PDF containing the necessary information.

4. Instructors

Who teaches the class?

UNCG MOOCs are created by current or retired UNCG professors noted for their expertise in the subject, teaching skills, and desire to help students learn. Short bios of the UNCG faculty who have elected to share their expertise and love of learning through a MOOC are on their course page.

1. The Basics

What is a MOOC?

MOOCs are one of the great innovations in public education available because of the Internet. “MOOC” stands for Massive Open Online Course–college-level online classes open to the public free of charge. They cover everything from ancient history to the latest in web design, and are taught by experts noted for their teaching skills and desire to make knowledge available to anyone who wants to learn. One exciting feature of MOOCs is the opportunity to learn with and from peers who share a common interest in the topic and diverse life experiences.

How much does it cost to take a course?

Nothing! That’s the best part. UNCG’s MOOCs are free to the public.

Will I receive college credit for taking a course?

No, but you will receive a certificate of completion at the end. Depending on the MOOC you are taking, the certificate could follow an end of unit exam or an end of MOOC exam. Completing a MOOC demonstrates mastery–and persistence–even if you don’t receive actual college credit.

If you are interested in pursuing a certificate or degree online, visit UNCG Online for more information on our credit programs.
